A Longquan bowl, Southern Song dynasty. Bowl carved on the outside with deep rather irregularly-carved flutes. The inside shows two carved circles at the well and three carved rings near the rim. The bluish opalescent crackled, rather degraded, the celadon glaze has run down and partly covered the deep and slightly crooked footing. The latter has been trimmed with an upwardly sloping knife-cut. The base has been burnt red-brown in the firing. The bowl was fired on a fireclay ring three cm in diameter, the…

A Yueyao bowl, early Northern song. This bowl has an incised Chinese character ' chi ' (= happiness or prosperity) in the well, with a carved and combed swirling decoration on the inside and a grouped linear carving on the outside. A fine brown-staining crackle shows in the yellowish-green glaze which extends unevenly to the foot. Presumably, it was the glaze, rather than the grey clay body, which contained the iron which stained the crackle. Where the glaze has not quite reached the foot the saw-tooth…

A Henan jar, possibly Tang /Song Dynasty. Jar with a wide neck and the everted lip above an ovoid body with symmetrical shoulders. The clay body is covered in the dark brown glaze which in places does not reach the rough unglazed irregular base. The latter shows adherent patches, possibly spur-marks. The glaze on one side of the jar is pitted as though it had been lying for a long time on that side. It seems to be made of rather coarse grey clay with a generous plaster of slip on the outside. There is no…

A model stove, Han Dynasty. Red pottery stove of boat shape, slab-made, set upon a flat base. A Cizhou figure of lady, Jin Dynasty (1154-1234), model of a lady, probably a servant, with both hands in front of her and a worried look on her face holding a draped cloth beneath a vase of flowers. The model is painted in black and brown with additional red and green pigments on a cream ground. This figure is remarkably well moulded, the profile, as well as the fore-and-aft view, are surprisingly good for so small a model. Models of this type are said to be rare in the song, much more common in the Tang…
