Description:
A model walled farmyard, Han Dynasty. Thermoluminescence test number 566k83 is consistent with the dating of this object. Model of red pottery with an overall green glaze which has degenerated and flaked in places. The model consists of a 3-sided walled enclosure containing a man in a sitting position operating a grain-pounding tilt-hammer housed above a mortar. Alongside the man is a circular grinding mill with two holes either side of the central fulcrum of the stone for the reception of the grain to be ground and a surrounding circular trough for the collection of the resultant flour. The hole in the side of the trough is to allow the ground floor to be easily swept into a container. To the left of the mill sits a dog on its haunches. Behind the dog are two chickens. In two places there are small elongated areas of red pottery compatible with linear spurs. The long arm of the tilt-hammer has been broken and repaired. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 23 cm, width 17 cm
