Description:
James Purdey 16 bore muzzle loading black powder shotgun, serial No. 2386, London proved Damascus barrels stamped J.P. With platinum plugs and line at breech, the barrels have been struck up ready for rebrowning with loss of address on the rib, the barrels are slightly etched but would rebrown with further striking up. Ramrod lacking, the typical early percussion locks have a scarce and early external form of safety catch which is original to the gun, the nicely figured walnut semi-pistol grip, cheek pieced stock has a steel butt plate and furniture, the grip fitted with a Purdey patent grip safety which is marked patent, the gun overall shows wear and some corrosion with loss of definition on the nicely scrolled foliage engraving locks and action, the gun in its original high quality Purdey mahogany case with flush mounted brass dehandle. Original fit-out internally for the gun showing some age foxing and minor distress with a blue J. Purdey, 3141/2 Oxford Street, London, trade label of the period.
