Low or No Reserves Kick Bonham's Fink Sale to 91% Clearance Rate

Some in Sydney’s antiques precinct around Woollahra shook their heads when Bonhams Australia announced a sale of stock from Andre and Cecile Fink, long-established dealers in Continental furniture. Not again, they said. A poisoned chalice, others muttered.

Second highest price in the sale was for this Australian colonial flamed cedar sideboard, circa 1840 (Lot 311) which sold for four times the upper estimate of $6,000 – 8,000 at $32,000 ($38,400 IBP).

Sotheby’s Australia achieved strong results in its Fine Furniture & Decorative Arts auction held in Melbourne on October 25 and 26, the standout sections of the sale being Australian furniture and decorative arts, and the Charles Lloyd Jones Collection.

At Joel’s, six bidders ignored the estimate of $6,000-$8,000 for a pair of Art Deco, diamond, emerald and opal earrings and took the price to $15,000 hammer ($18,000 IBP)

Buyers Not Attracted to Jewellery in Melbourne.

The two Tim Goodman auction franchises, Leonard Joel and Sotheby’s both had disappointing results from their jewellery auctions in Melbourne during the week.

The sideboard as it was exhibited in Melbourne at Victoria’s Intercolonial Exhibition of 1866-7, (above) and at the London International Exhibition of 1873, (below).
