“Of course, it is unlikely they will last as long as much of the furniture we have seen pass through our auction business in the past 85 years,” he says.

These insights were being offered as Young’s Auctions (which sold its premises earlier this year) held its farewell sale on Friday December 18 before closing the business for good.

Court rules quake-damaged Lladro figurines are artworks

10-Oct-2015

A Christchurch businessman has failed in his insurance claim to prove that his artworks, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars . . . are not artworks.

Brian Newbery, a former owner of St Martins New World supermarket, had 30 Lladro porcelain figurines damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. They were valued at $210,065. His contents policy with AA Insurance, which took effect a week before the quake, stated works of art were insured for up to $5000, but no more than $20,000 would be paid out for any event.

Lladro figurines are hand-made in Spain. Two of Newbery's pieces were valued at more than $20,000 each; several others were worth more than $10,000.
