*** A Magnificent Fern Box by Anton Seuffert (1815-1887). This Anton Seuffert fern box is one of only seven known examples of this genre from the workshop of New Zealand's premier cabinetmaker. Fern boxes were made to store pressed native fern specimens mounted inside paper folders. The Victorian English were keen collectors of flora and fauna from the lands of the New World.… ***
*** A Superb Fern Album by Anton Seuffert. A large proportion of Seuffert works have some form of fern or plant imagery. In this vein, fern album books were manufactured containing pressed ferns mounted on pages inside front and back covers of detailed inlay. The front covers always feature a fern in the central design and the back cover, a geometric series of patterns. It would appear that Anton Seuffert worked closely with Thomas Cranwell in the production of these albums.… ***
*** A Superb Handkerchief Box by Anton Seuffert. This Seuffert handkerchief box was returned from England after remaining within the same UK based family since it's original acquisition. Apparently the family ancestors purchased it new at a public exhibition in Great Britain in the 1880s. Anton Seuffert was well known for promoting his work in Australia, England and Europe and won many awards from these types of displays.… ***

*** An Elegant Anton Seuffert Domed Glove Box, burr totara with native timber inlay. This glove box is an early example from the workshop of New Zealand's premier colonial cabinetmaker. The black label attached inside indicates construction prior to 1869 when Seuffert's label was upgraded to reflect his Royal Appointment. As the name implies, glove boxes were made to store small clothing items or possibly valuable mementoes. In 1875 these boxes were advertised for sale for £3.… ***

*** A Miniature Mottled Kauri and Puriri Chest c.1900 Extravagant use of highly figured timbers in this miniature chest could indicate that it was made as a sample piece, perhaps by an apprentice developing his skills without wasting expensive materials. As a sample, the cabinetmaker or retailer could demonstrate the effect of the timbers and intended design elements. The plinth base and turned knobs place this chest in the later part of the colonial period.… ***

*** W.A. Jewell Glove Box c.1895 Inlaid glove boxes, such as this fine example, were popular during the colonial period. W.H Jewell established himself as a cabinetmaker in Christchurch about 1875 and he and his family, including W.A. Jewell, continued in the trade well into the 20th century.… ***
