Very rare and important pre-European stone carved Maori stone God sinker (mahe) or ballast stone, with carved double tiki figures. Pre European 17/18th century.of exceptional quality and superior to those in the British Museum, these fishing sinkers are extremely rare and their importance is shown by Te Papa putting one on their front cover of 'Toi Ora, ancestral Maori Treasures' book. Two stone carved Maori figures holding the bowl, tiki faces are carved on either side of the bowl and there are four tiki faces on the lid all with paua shell inset eyes, the kumete has rauru (an elliptical centre and the spirals are formed of triple ridges separated by a beaded line) double spirals all over.
