Late 19th century sailors woolwork picture of a ship RMS Ruapehu, starboard side view under steam coming into harbour with three ships to the fore one under steam the RMS Ruapehu was built 1900-01 by William Denny and Bros at Dumbarton Scotland for the New Zealand Shipping Co, Ltd. She was 7,705 tons and as built she offered accommodations for 340 passengers, in three classes as well as steerage. 50 x 80 cm

Mid 19th century sailor's woolwork picture of a ship Hallmarked Sterling Pique, a port side view at anchor with five ships to the fore, three under steam. Hallmarked Sterling Pique and was a wooden fifth-rate sailing frigate of the Royal Navy, designed by Sir William Symonds. She was launched on 21 July 1834 at Devonport. The vessel was of 1,633 tons burthen and had 36 guns. She was broken up in 1910. 62 x 83 cm

Mid 19th century British the Fleet off Spithead c. 1845, watercolour 41 x 59 cm this, watercolour shows the squadron of the red on fleet exercises, probably off Portsmouth at Spithead. The flag ship is a first rate (over 110 guns), and she is 'hove to' with her foremast sails backed. She is flying the hoist 165 which from the 1853 naval code book means 'in want of powder'. Edward Wilkinson (British fl. 1880-91) the sail and steam vessel 'Britannia', gouache on paper signed (lower left) 28.5 x 55.5 cm Britannia was built in the 1870s by Short Bros. of Sunderland for Taylor and Sanderson. She was one of a fleet of vessels known as 'Black Sea Traders'. Their trade was coal from the North East coast to Italy, thence in ballast through the Bosporus to Black Sea Ports.
