Description:
A Collection of World War I items belonging to Private James Bird, including a World War I Victory medal awarded to '3/564 Prt. J.S. Bird. N.Z.E.F.' Private James Samuel Bird of Timaru, served with the New Zealand Medical Corps. He was drowned with the British Troopship 'Marquetee' was torpedoed by a German U boat near Salonika on 23 October 1915. A total of 167 perished, including 10 New Zealand nurses and 22 members of the New Zealand No1. Stationary Hospital. The medal comes with ribbon and both are in excellent condition as they were kept in a folding leather wallet, which also contains: a green notebook attached to a wallet that contains Bird's personal details and six pages of notes concerning the Gasland Trench Howitzer and advice on the safety of handling 'bombs' (grenades) in trenches, a pressed dried pink flower, two photograph postcards; one of a NZMC private unnamed but possibly Bird, the second of an 8th Reinforcements Corporal (6/3319), no name
