A rare 18th century cased compound and simple microscope, George Adams (c. 1709-1773), London, eight objectives for compound and four simple lenses, together with accessories including ivory slides, cased in mahogany box, 36 x 21.5 x 12.5 cm. Catalogue note: George Adams, Senior and Junior, were considered the most important instrument makers of the late 18th century and both held the post of Mathematical Instrument Maker to the King. George Adams senior and his Son both became official supplier of instruments to the Ordnance Department, with his Son's appointment coinciding with the American war of Independence., a collection of Adam's scientific instruments is in the Science Museum, London.
