Description:
A carved ivory figure of Guanyin, Qing dynasty, 18th/19th century, seated on a high rockwork ledge with right hand resting on her raised right knee, a long-tailed bird perched at her side, and with two boy attendants, their hands clasped in prayer standing below, with bamboo and flowering plants growing from crevices, 23 cm high. Provenance: Property of the late Mr. Arthur Tipper, New South Wales, Arthur Tipper went to China in 1901 and worked in Tientsin (Tianjin) until he was re-patriated to Sydney in 1946. During the Second World War he and his family were interned by the Japanese and his collection of ivory and jade works of art was placed in storage until they were released in 1946 when the ivory pieces were brought to Australia.
