Description:
A Fine Arts & Crafts architectural style 3 door cabinet attributed to Albert Ridley, c.1925-1930's, hardwood with dark finish, possibly, padauk. The cabinet has 3 doors flanked by reeded columns, each cupboard having two interior shelves. The design of the cabinet uses a mixture of Arts & Crafts design and architectural styles including Dutch, influences. The doors are panelled pegged mortise and tenon, construction, with ivory embellishments, having cut, and pierced Art Nouveau style brass escutcheon, lock plates, and brass keys with Art Nouveau style, handle motifs. The base of the cabinet is supported by 8 legs with reeded decoration, and a central stretcher rail, joining front with rear legs. Height 169 cm. Width 162.5 cm. Depth 53.5 cm. Provenance: Ridley is recorded as working in Perth, from c.1915-25 and exhibiting, c.1925. The cabinet was purchased circa 2006, with Albert Ridley's World War I service medal, naval service book, and various ephemera and documents. His World War I service record book lists his occupation as a cabinetmaker and during the first World War, he, worked as a joiner in the Royal Australian Navy. It is recorded in a letter dated 1925, from the managing director of the Sunday Times, J.M. Smith, that Albert was part of a furniture exhibition, having exhibited a table at the time
