Description:
A 19th century African iron Songe axe, probably Ngongo tribe, Congo. Wooden handle sheathed in copper. Four heads in the iron work. Provenance: Purchased from Dunbar Sloane Auckland, 2007. Previously purchased in in Belgium during the 1880 period by Meister Doctor Joachim H. Brouwers (great-great grandfather of the vendor). During the 1860s many African artefacts were turning up in Europe from European colonies in Africa e.g. Belgian Congo. A similar axe can be seen in Steven Phelps’ 'The James Hooper collection’, p. 405, Ref. No. Photo 1897. Height 45 cm
