Description:
An Australian silver mug, possibly Robert Broad Sydney, circa 1840, of tapering form, plain angular hollow handle, profusely embossed with foliate scrolls, shells and thistles on a pitted ground, central shield reserve, initialled and dated 1848, height 9.5 cm, weight 245gms. The 'Maker's Mark' appears to be RB but is slightly worn and the punch is rectangular rather then the shield shaped found on broad's flatware. However, the four other punches are more typical of his mark. The borrowing of punches between 19th century Sydney makers is well documented, suggesting this might be an alternative mark for broad or one of his contemporaries.
