An unusual French 18th century carved ivory ceremonial mace, in three sections, the top section in the form of a spear with fleur De lis tip a twisted tapering design decorated with lotus and acanthus leaves, the mid section carved in low relief with images of European and African animals such as lions, elephants and dogs fighting with mythical creatures such as dragons and a unicorn, the bottom section with a central profile portrait of Henry IV of France, within a frame inscribed ' Henry Iiii Roy De France Et De Navar'' and dated 1598 with his coat of arms on the reverse and with extensive acanthus leaf decoration, 85 cm long. Provenance: private collection Sydney, Purchased in the UK in May 1960 for ยท25, note: Henry IV (13 December 1553 - 14 May 1610), Henri-Quatre, was King of France from 1589 to 1610 and King of Navarre from 1572 to 1610. He was the first monarch of the Bourbon branch of the Capetian dynasty in France
