An Australian silver presentation piece by Edward Fischer, Geelong, circa 1884, the central palm tree between a pair of bean pod and silver urns, one inscribed with, the initials 'GM' and the other with a hand holding a dagger, on an oval base with leaf engraving, raised on a leaf carved stained pine plinth, with central shield engraved; to/George Mackay/M.B.cm-M.R.C.S/ a Token of Gratitude/from/George Morrison/Geelong College/Victoria/1884, with marker's mark Fischer sterling silver, 20 cm wide, 14 cm deep, 17 cm high. note: Edward Francis Gunther Fischer (1828-1911) was born in Vienna and arrived in Australia in 1853. By 1857 he had established a gold and silversmith business in Geelong, which expanded to employing some 17 workers by the mid 1870s. in 1891, Fischer sold, the business and moved to Melbourne where, by 1895 he was in partnership with his Son Harry Caspar Fischer. He retired in 1911 remaining in Melbourne until his death in 1911. This claret jug's 'Box Section' engraved handle may be compared with those of the 1878 and 1880 Geelong gold cups illustrated in Hawkins 'Nineteenth century Australian Silver', vol.1 pages 296 and 308
