An old Papua New Guinea long club, the carved stone head of star form worked to six various points with a central hole fitted to a long tapered wood shaft with woven fibre binding. Length 945, maximum diameter of stone head 22 cm Provenance: from the collection of Mr D. Elliott 'Between 1969 and 1978 - I Was a Senior Technical Officer at the University of Technology in L' Papua New Guinea. I put my indigenous employees through apprenticeships in various trades. before i left, the father of one of them presented me with his most prized possession, this club which he said had been used in tribal fighting and attacking bearers carrying supplies to the Wau Goldfields from Salamaua on the coast killing a number, possibly around 3. He only spoke in his place (village) talk....., the father was a very old man who clearly remembered German New Guinea before the Australians occupied it in 1914...
