A large and important original group photograph of the Wellington Submarine miners, 1906, the Submarine miners were a naval Volunteers unit, part of the present day Royal N.Z. Navy, they were formed due to the Russian invasion scare, but the group was short lived. This is one of just a few images of the Wsmv and the only one showing detail of their embroidered jerseys and the senior Nco's uniform, the photo shows the left half Cutter Crew - Winners of the Challenge cup 1906, the image is made more rare by the presence of the named mat board, and many of those shown went on to have further military service. Sapper C.D. Marcussen, 41218 Sgt. Christian D. Marcussen from Bluff died England 4 December 1918. Tragically his brother Thomas died with the Nzmgc on the same day. Sgt. C.S. Lechner, 69245 Pte. Cecil Stanton Lechner served World War I with the Specialist Coy of the 36th Reinforcements. Sapper J. Sullivan, 10/3097 Pte. James Sullivan, Wellington Infantry and died of wounds 30 August 1918. Sapper H.J. Hall - May be 30111 2nd Lt. Henry Johnson hall, served with the 21st Reinforcements and was killed at Passchend'le 4 October 1917. Cpl. Bullot, is presumed to be 42277 Cpl. Ernest Wilfred Less Bullot, served with the 24th Reinforcements. Sgt. Major P.J. Ellis, 2/455 2nd Lt. Phillip John Ellis, served with main body, he won the Mc and ended the war as a Major commanding 5th Battery, New Zealand field artillery. L. Cpl A. Baker, probably 7625 Trooper Arthur Baker who served in the Boer War. Sapper P.J. Devine, 6/2498 Pte. Patrick John Devine, served in the Samoan Advance and then with the 6th Reinforcements. Killed in France 9 July 1916. Sapper W. Sullivan, presumed to be 8/2483 Sgt. William Sullivan, served with the 5th Reinforcements. He was killed in France 25 August 1918. He was awarded the MM, London Gazette, 14 Jan 1918 'For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty While the Battalion Was Holding the Line Near Kron Prinz Farm From 14 October to 17 October 1917. He Did Excellent and Courageous Work As a Runner For Brigade Headquarters and Later, Rejoining His Unit, Did Further Excellent and Daring Work in Carrying Despatches and Acting As the Guide For the Relieving Unit Under Very Severe Enemy Shelling. He Has Previously Done Most Excellent Work, Especially During the Operations at Gravenstafel on 4/5th October 1917.'
