Description:
A very interesting 23 Batn. Italy and Yugoslavia Diary, the author was a private, wounded, very likely at Monte Cassino, however, he made a recovery and remained with the Battalion as it made its way through Italy, the 1945 diary covers some interesting periods of the service of the Battalion and whilst the author used few words to summarise what he sees it lives little to the imagination: 'Throwing Hand Grenades in the Canals to Catch Fish But Not Much Luck to It' '2 o'clock bombers came over and gave jerry's hell. Heavy Arty barrage opened up also. Flame throwers fired over river and then infantry crossed' 'Cleared Road with the Wasps. Italian Partisans Helping' 'Fired flamethrower in front of one of Tito's machine gun nests' 'Went Out Looting in the Carrier and Cleared Right Flank By Mistake', the diary was kept by 239951 Pte. Raymond Edgar Squire (the Son of a World War IVeteran 31544 Rifleman Edgar Squire NZEF), 23 Btn. This was the Battalion of the legendary Clive Hulme, VC). Squire was wounded in May 1944. Included are 2 newspaper clippings (one referring to a dance in his honour in his home town of Rapaura), a presentation certificate, the diary itself, a telegram to his parents advising of the wound, a photo taken in the field and an Italian-English dictionary carried by Squire in Italy.
