A shibayama-inlaid gold lacquer saya inro, Meiji period, of upright form, the saya with a continuous scene of a giant octopus chasing two terrified men, one side depicting the octopus emerging from the waves, with thatched huts and mountains in the distance, the reverse showing the two men fleeing from the approaching tentacles, one falling in his haste, the other with his leg already entwined, inlaid in typical shibayama style, the interior four-case inro lacquered with stylized waves; signed Ekishin, with wood netsuke of a boy beating a large drum, signed Hidenaga, and ivory ojime, signed. Height 9 cm
