A large Japanese Buddhist altar, late 19th century, the rectangular case lacquered black and fitted with vertical doors hinged in two sections and inner latticed doors, all opening to reveal an elaborate altar with Amida Buddha and his attendants Kannon and Seishi, all decorated in gold lacquer and polychrome pigments, set on multi-tiered stands housed in Buddhist architectural elements decorated with coiling dragons in clouds, foliate scroll and birds in flowers pierce-carved and painted in gold lacquer and polychrome pigments, the eaves with four sets of hanging ritual garlands, and two addition gilt-metal lanterns, all supported by a two-level plinth set on four feet on a shelf fitted with three drawers, the interior bright gold lacquer, the upper edge on the door frame fitted with an ornamental flourish carved in the round with a temple pavilion with fanciful beasts, Chinese lions, bamboo, pine and plum, the interior of the outer doors gold lacquer painted with birds and flowers, the interior doors applied with screen netting decorated with scrolling vines in gold brocade, the lower panels lacquered with birds and flowers, set on a base fitted with two large and three small drawers, gilt-bronze hardware carved with chrysanthemums and scrolling vines against a nanako ground.
