Description:
A superb handkerchief box by Anton Seuffert. This Seuffert handkerchief box was returned from England after remaining within the same UK based family since it's original acquisition. Apparently the family ancestors purchased it new at a public exhibition in Great Britain in the 1880s. Anton Seuffert was well known for promoting his work in Australia, England and Europe and won many awards from these types of displays, the box is a standard Seuffert size and format, with inlaid fern, parquetry banding, burr totara borders, rewarewa internal lid veneer, kauri and rimu carcass timbers and a post 1869 Anton Seuffert Royal Appointment label. A unique feature not seen on any other Sueffert box is the use of oblong specimen panels around the sides. This modernising departure from Seuffert's earlier Gothic arch designs would indicate construction in the later 1880s towards the end of Anton's life, the box has retained strong veneer colouring and is in sound condition. It shows no signs of splitting or warping, often seen in examples from this year when made from poorly seasoned carcass timbers. Information provided by Brian Peet. Length 13 cm. Width 31 cm. Depth 23 cm
