'Airmen's Valhalla' original pen and ink tribute to Smithy, artwork by Virgil Gavan Reilly, enhanced with a photograph of Charles Kingsford Smith in flying gear. Depicts Smithy waving farewell to a group of fellow aviators as he disappears into the clouds. 51 x 60 cm framed and glazed; signed and endorsed 'To Bill' at lower left. Virgil Gavan Reilly [1892-1974] also known as 'Virgil', active during the 1920s-40s, designed the A.I.F. stamps issued in 1940 and won the inaugural Walkley Award for illustration in 1958. Reilly painted this image for Liam 'Bill' Beausang, who had worked as an engineer for Kingsford Smith. Beausang went on to work for the Abc for more than 30 years
