Description:
The Letter Book of Pvte Edward Herbert Fisher (b. 1982), killed in action 29th April 1915 at the Dardanelles. He sailed on the Ss Arawa (with the first letter dated 23 October 1914) and was transferred to the Ss Limerick as Radio Operator in November 1914. (He was formerly a member of the telegraph staff at the General Post Office). He was on duty during the Sydney-Emden engagement and had a rare 'coding' duel with a German operator who was trying to jamb signals between the Cocos Islands and the escort to the Expeditionary Force. When the allied radio and signal base was blown up, Fisher became a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli and was shot dead on a recovery. Also included are the named medals - The Great War for Civilisation 1914-19, 1914-18 medal and 1914-15 medal together with a framed tribute to Fisher, including photo and Death Plaque.
