Description:
A Royal Worcester porcelain 'Limoges Enamel' decorated plate, dated 1878, the enamel decoration by Thomas John Bott, circular, cobalt blue ground with a plain white rim, finely decorated in white enamel with the mounted St George vanquishing the dragon after William Wyon, inscribed and signed underside 'St George, after W. Wyon. / T.J. Bott. 1878' together with two impressed factory marks, 25.5 cm diameter. Other notes: William Wyon (1795-1851) was chief engraver at the Royal mint from 1828 until his death. The decoration on the present lot reproduces his design for a private medal commissioned by Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert, in 1844, the subject apparently intended to allude to Albert's passionate commitment to advancing the arts in England.. Condition: broken into four pieces and restored
