An important Australian sterling silver claret jug by William Edwards, Melbourne, first half 1860s, maker's mark W.E between emu and kangaroo marks, baluster shaped with a wavy mouth and spout, high scrolled loop handle, and standing on a barbed octofoil foot, richly worked with decoration throughout, the foliate neck above the body with repousse foliage-framed cartouches of flowers and fruit against the stippled ground, the foot conforming, the handle modelled as a woody grape vine stem wrapped with leaves, fruit, and tendrils, the cap of the cork stopper conforming with the handle, the cartouche to the body beneath the spout blank, 36 cm high, 756g including stopper (the ewer alone 692g)
