Ship's wheel, World War II German Submarine Uit-23, originally the Italian Liuzzi-class submarine Reginaldo Giuliani. As the Giuliani, the submarine sank three allied cargo ships in 1942. When Italy surrendered in September 1943, the Giuliani was in Singapore. She was seized by Germany. In February 1944, the newly-named Uit-23, laden with vital supplies for the war effort, was torpedoed and sunk by the English submarine hallmarked sterling Tally-Ho. In the 1980's, the Uit-23 was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher. Provenance: Hatcher & Co salvaged the submarine in partnership with Michael Houston. As part of the partnership settlement, part of the salvage went to Michael Houston, and thence to the consigning Perth family
