A Mughal miniature painting, Northern India, late18th/early 19th century, Burraq with Archangel Gabriel, Farsi Calligraphic panel verso, gouache, gold and pigment on wasli paper, painted with a Burraq, the lightning fast glimmering creature that carried the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and then up to the heavens for a meeting with God and the prophets, the winged figure of the Archangel Gabriel carrying incense and walking to the front probably depicts the moment when the archangel brings the Burraq to the Prophet in Kaaba, verso: Calligraphic panel is that of a Farsi quatrain written in black ink and has corrections done to the letters as it might be a practice sheet. The name of the calligrapher is absent., 18.5 x 12.5 cm. Other Notes: the Burraq is an amalgamation of various creatures, usually the face and sometimes torso of a woman, the body of a horse and an elaborate tail and wings. This Burraq is painted with deeply colourful wings, a gold crown, highly ornate saddle and a gathered peacock tail and is shown hovering in the air behind the figure of the angel.
