German brass and bronze Columbus 'Bilateral' letter scale, German patent 16742, probably manufactured in Hamburg by Ph. J. Maul, made specifically for the English market as it is marked in ounces and pence. Fine decorated base and stand and letter pan. The majority of this type from Germany were marked in grams. The two counterbalanced arms work together to gauge the weight. Rare. 10 x 10 x 18 cm high
