Description:
A Papua New Guinea Sepik River skull rack, traditionally used to display the skulls of enemies, the role of these anthropomorphic figures changed in the early 20th century to be used to display the skulls of ancestors. This rare example dating from circa 1920 has a clay modeled head with painted pigment decoration with cowrie shell eyes and boars tusks to the nose and with tufts of human hair. The body made from woven rattan and adorned with plant fibre. Raised on a fitted stand. Some losses to the head section and later fabric binding to the arms, 210 x 80 cm
