Photograph, Judith Fletcher. Framed & glazed photograph of the French Mission to Australia, 1918. This was a political, scientific & economic mission which left France for Australia during Ludendorff's massive 'Spring Offensive' which brought the German armies to the gates of Paris. The leader of the mission, Albert Metin, died at San Francisco en route to Australia & was succeeded by General Pau. Signed on the mount by General Pau & other members of the mission & by J. Meadows Smith a British Consular official in Paris who accompanied the mission. There is an inscription on the top margin 'To the Hon John Bowser, Mla.' John Bowser was premier of Victoria in 1918. On the reverse of the frame there are two notations 'Mla Bowser' & 'French Mission' & a label for Courteney's Thelma studio (Melbourne ') where Bowser most likely had the photograph framed. Printed on the mount board Judith Fletcher 313 George St Sydney. One of the few professional female photographers in early 20th century Sydney, Fletcher had her own studio where she photographed her friend Arthur Streeton & other notabilities. Image size 17 x 20 cm, with mount 26.5 x 26.5 cm. Frame 31 x 31 cm.
