Framed & glazed photograph. RAAF de Haviland DH9A was one of thirty gifted by the British government after the first World War so that Australia could form an air force. This plane A1-28 (previously E9692 RAF) was manufactured by Mann, Egerton & Co., Norwick, Norfolk England. Source: Adf Serials. Rigged as a single seater, A1-28 RAAF won the aerial Derby, mascot & the aerial Services race, Brisbane. A1-28 crewed by flying Officer M.B. Allen & Cpl G.W. Allen was one of the four RAAF planes that took part in the search for Keith Anderson & Bob Hitchcock missing in their Westland Widgeon airplane 'Kookaburra' while themselves searching for their friends Kingsford Smith, Ulm, McWilliams & Litchfield who had force landed the Southern Cross in north Western Australia during a flight from Sydney to England. This became known as the 'Coffee Royal Incident'. A1-28 became unserviceable at Tennant Creek NT with an engine problem and was written off. Image size 22.5 x 35.5 cm, frame 62 x 78 cm.
