Description:
18ct gold, platinum, citrine, diamond and ruby 'Bird-on-a-Rock' brooch, Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co., modelled as a bird, pave-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, the eye accented by a circular-cut ruby, highlighted with a gold plume, perched above a claw-set cushion-shaped citrine weighing between 60.00-65.00 carats, length approximately 55.50 mm, signed Tiffany & Co., Schlumberger. Literature: Claire Phillips (Ed.), Bejewelled by Tiffany 1837-1987, London, 2006, pp. 275,276 (illustrated, another example). Catalogue notes: Jean Schlumberger initially designed the 'Bird-on-a-Rock' brooch in 1961 to display a large topaz. For the designer's 1995 retrospective at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the Tiffany diamond, a rare 128.54 carat fancy yellow diamond, was mounted in this design, following which the brooch was put on permanent display in the brand's fifth Avenue flagship location. Today, amongst Collectors, this iconic design is instantly identified with the Tiffany brand.
