William IV sterling silver cup, mark of William Eaton, London, 1835, of campagna form with chased acanthus leaves adorning the lower body and a gilded interior, engraved 'Charles Wilday Austin from his god-father Sir James Carmichael Smyth 1837', hallmarked, height 18.5 cm, weight 444 grams. Major-general Sir James Carmichael-Smyth was a British army officer and Colonial Administrator. Commander of the Royal Corps of engineers & Sappers at Waterloo. He was, made Governor of the Bahamas in May 1829 and Governor of British Guiana in June 1833
