(Van Diemen's Land) The Assignment System, 2 May 1833, original letter from the Principal Superintendents Office, to Josiah Spode, The Police Magistrate, Richmond, being a request for a list of the names of the free settlers in the district in order for them to receive 'assigned servants'. Convicts were assigned to free settlers through an application lodged with the Governor by a settler. If convicts? spouses were free, some married convicts were able to be assigned to their spouse. Convicts were often listed as 'Government Servants' (Gs) while serving time. Under this assignment system of convict servants to free settlers, the towns of the colony were able to be built, including the building of houses, stables, barns, shops and hotels. In Van Diemen's Land, convicts were managed under the assignment system until 1840, under which free settlers could be assigned convict labourers in return for feeding, clothing, and housing them.
