Description:
An Ex-Convict Applies For A Licence to Keep An Inn or Public House, November 1833 application by George Aitcheson of Oatlands to operate the Lake Frederick Inn, being a printed document completed in manuscript on behalf of the JPs Thomas Anstey and John Whitefoord. George Aitchison had been convicted at Edinburgh and sentenced to 14 years in prison. He was sent to Van Dieman's Land on the Hibernia on 20th Nov. 1818 with 158 other convicts. They arrived on 11th May 1819. Aitchison was a stonemason by trade and by 1829 he had constructed the York and Albany Inn and was the mason in charge during the construction of the St Peter's Anglican Church in Oatlands. He worked on many buildings throughout the Oatlands township. In 1833 he built the Lake Frederick Inn as a coaching stop, out of stone and 50,000 locally made bricks. Aitchison had completed his convict sentence when he began constructing the Inn, and by this time was regarded as a 'fine mechanic', as good tradesmen were typically described. The Inn was one of eight built in the town and until 1882 remained a hotel. A local family bought the Inn in the early 20th century and used it as a private home until 1975, after which it was used for commercial purposes before becoming a private home once more in 2003.
