Rare and superb waka taua - war canoe early 19th century, the prow with weathered rear facing figure, spiral and notch motif separating forward facing figure with extended tongue and paua shell inset eyes, spiral motif along gunwales, stern (taurapa) with manaia figure and tiki face (paua shell inset eyes) below spiral and notch motif. 'Teeth’ to top of stern, six taumanu, length 152 cm. Provenance: formerly of the Ohly collection, London. William Ohly ran the Berkeley gallery in the 1940s to 60s. The gallery, off Berkley square in London was famed for its ornamental, Oceanic and African artefact offerings. It was a mecca for collectors of the time such as James Hooper, Kenneth Webster, Kenneth Hewett and William Oldman.
