A 19th century carved Taiaha, of dark brown finish with good patination, the shaft of oval section, the distal end flares to a flat paddle shape which has been carved on both sides with h'h' and pakati, whakarare and unaunahi type patterning, the central shaft through to the tongue is uncarved, the tongue is fully carved on both surfaces in rauru type spiral pattern. All eye insets missing including insets to shaft at distal end. Some damage. Length 148 cm

Provenance; gifted to the vendor's father from a Maori elder who at that time was living at Te Kaha. A Maori Hazard's baby Repeater Winchester model 1906.22 calibre rifle, manufactured 1922, the gun butt Maori carved on both sides with a naturalistic face in profile on the upper edge, one side has a large rauro type spiral below with whakarare pattern above. Other side has weku type face below with whakarare pattern above. Band of spirals with notching carved on underside of butt. This rifle is in working condition. This style of rifle was a favourite for poachers in the late 19th century
