An Early Lute (hasapi), Toba Batak, North Sumatra, Indonesia, (nineteenth century), carved wood, string and pigments, 72.6 cm long. Provenance: Sulawesi Arts, Bali. Acquired from above by Dr Peter Elliott, in 1998, The extremity in form of bird. Body intricately carved geometrically as is the handle on the reverse of which is carved a lizard and a snake. The body and handle are heavily patinated with red and black pigment evident. An early example.
