Description:
A Chinese export carved gilt lacquered side cabinet, 19th century, raised on a decorative pedestal base, with two front panels, each with an inner cartouche, depicting the continuation of a gilded mountainous landscape and river scene with figures and pavilions, with an inscription to both, reflecting on the time of the season, with 'the flowers not yet fully in bloom, and the moon not yet at its fullest'. Framed by a pierced gilt floral border, and surmounted either side by two separate horizontal panels in high relief showing daily life under rich foliage. A separate fine gilt border highlights each section, with detailed brass hinges and latch to the front, with unusual scenes to the sides, one showing a man dressed as a deer begging for his life, from a group of men holding swords and arrows, the other side similarly, showing another man begging for his life from an audience, with the emperor holding court, supported on four short legs, 95 x 105.5 x 49.5 cm, the inscription gives the date as 5th day of the 5th month. Provenance: Private Collection, Exhibited at Georges, Melbourne.
