Description:
1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Convertible (Lhd) Registration no. Bhx-91B (NSW) Expires 15/01/11Chassis no. 30867S1114762Engine no. 3114762, To say that the Sting Ray's arrival for 1963 caused a sensation would be grossly understating its impact on the North American sports car market. Such was its runaway success that the St Louis factory hired a second shift but still could not build cars fast enough to meet demand. Designed by General Motors' Art & Colour Studio chief Bill Mitchell, the new Corvette featured radical styling pioneered on Mitchell's successful Stingray sports-racer penned by the talented young stylist Larry Shinoda. For the first time there was a Gran Turismo coupÚ in the range. Controversial at the time, the coupÚ's divided rear screen would last for one year only; many cars were subsequently converted to one-piece glass, making the survivors with this feature the most collectible of all 1963-67 Corvettes. Other features included hidden headlamps and in keeping with Corvette tradition the panel s were made from fiberglass. Beneath the skin was an all-new ladder-frame chassis with independent rear suspension, the work of Chevrolet Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the adoption of which enabled the centre of gravity to be significantly lowered, improving both roadholding and ride. In fact, so good was the Sting Ray's handling that it was capable of competing with the much smaller and more agile Cobra on the racetrack, although a lack of factory support meant the car never achieved the results it was clearly capable of. The Sting Ray's power unit was a 327cu in (5,360cc) V8 available in varying states of tune ranging from the base L75 model's 250bhp up to 360 horsepower in high-compression, fuel-injected L84 form. Three or four-speed manual or automatic transmissions were available. Finished in white with contrasting red upholstery, this 1963 Corvette is an older restoration showing approximately 19,000 miles on the clock. Fitted with a 327cu in V8 and automatic transmission, the 'Vette' is perfect for summer crusing. Registered as 'Bhx-91B' in New South Wales until January 2011 the car will be sold with a Pink Slip if sold in New South Wales only.
