Description:
Important Diary of Flt Lt. William. Depth brown, DFC, the diary, although covering his early service really commences in late 1942, earlier entries seemingly being recollections rather than a diary per se. However, the diary does include a detailed section of his service in Japan in 1946, which is an unusual and important insight into what remains a largely undocumented and unresearched area of military history from an Air Force perspective. Sold with a copy of his service file and a photocopy of his pilot's log book. Brown served with 75 Squadron Rnzaf, primarily engaged in night bombing raids over Europe. It was in this capacity as a flying Officer (rear gunner) in March that he shot down a Messerschmitt 110 and thus earning him the DFC. In 1942 he was sent to Australia as Chief Gunnery Officer, however, subsequently he served in Fiji and later New Zealand, before service with J Force, in Japan, from Feb to Sept 1946. He retired in 1955, having served post war as Adjutant of Ohakea and at Whenuapai
