Mottled kauri wardrobe c. 1880 This wardrobe of excellent quality displays a multitude of mottled kauri in both solid and veneered form, together with figured puriri veneers, the profuse use of decorative native timbers was common throughout the colonial period, evidencing a willing acceptance of the new timbers' characteristics in cabinetmaking. Raised on bun feet and with original pediment, this wardrobe is a highly accomplished example of colonial cabinetmaking. This design style was made from the 1880's through to the early part of the 20th century. This wardrobe matches the next lot (no.68) displaying the same handle pattern and signature design features. Almost certainly from the well regarded firm Tonson Garlick Co. Ltd, 'The Peoples' furnishing Warehouse, of Auckland. Height 227 cm. Width 128 cm
