Description:
Eric Spencer Macky High Born Maori Lady Kiri Matao of the Ngati Whakaue. Oil on fabric Signed Csm & dated 1937 28 x 24 cm Born in Auckland, Eric Spencer Macky enrolled at Elam School of Art, but soon left to study under C.F. Goldie between 1899 and 1902. During this time he won several prizes including a Gold Medal at the Auckland Society of Art. In 1900 he travelled to Melbourne studying under B. Hall at the Painting School of the National Gallery. Macky returned to Nz in 1906, working as a cartoonist on the Auckland Weekly News. He then left for Paris in 1907 before settling in California with his wife, fellow painter Constance Jenkins, where he established a distinguished artistic career. He was the Dean and Professor of Painting at the California School of Fine Arts for 27 years. The subject of this painting, likely painted by Macky whilst living in California, has been taken from C.F. Goldie's Kapai Te Torori, translated as 'Good Tobacco' painted in 1916. Kiri Matao was the last Te Arawa woman to be taught the sacred arts of warfare at the Maninihau Whare Maire (Maori School of Learning), Ruato, Rotoiti. In 1870 she was captured by Te Kooti but quickly escaped. Kiri Matao was a prominent member of the Ohinemutu community and travelled to the United States as a leader of a performance group.
