Description:
A medal group including Distinguished Conduct medal awarded to Sergeant Samuel Hartley, 2nd Battalion, New Zealand rifle Brigade (b. 1894, Marton, New Zealand). Includes field correspondence book of Lt. H.B. Patrick in which the recommendation for Hartley's Dcm is detailed. 'On the night of 28/29 October (1918) This NCO volunteered to conduct a raid on an enemy position which had been observed late on the afternoon of the 28th October. At very short notice he collected his raiding party from men who had been working hard for some days and were much fatigued....explained his scheme of attack before them. His Personal eagerness (?) and enthusiasm in the adventure caused his men to enter into the spirit of the raid.....' Hartley later went on to be Finance Controller for Fletcher Holdings in Auckland. He was well known in racing circles throughout New Zealand and Australia. Medal group includes named D cm, 1914-15 medal, 1914-18 medal, the Great War for Civilisation 1914-19 medal and B9 NZEF hat badge.
