Description:
John Gibb Picton Foreshore, Queen Charlotte Sound, S.I. Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1888 41 x 61 cm. The scene depicts the early boat building yards, hotels and general commercial buildings, plus early sailing vessels and steam powered ships in port. In the foreground is a fisherman in a dinghy with his fishing nets drying alongside. Samuel E. Green was born in Market Hasborough in Leicestershire in 1837. In 1861 Green came to Otago during the gold rush for which he did a considerable amount of boating on Lake Waihola. Finding the landscape charming, he purchased some land in Akatore, now known as Stantonbury. Green had a natural aptitude for artistic work. Many of his watercolours are of local scenes and homesteads and the works are much treasured by those who possess them. He was a member of the Otago Art Society and exhibited many of his works at annual exhibitions
