(locomotive was built at the Islington Railway Workshops in South Australia to the design of the Commonwealth Land Transport board as a wartime measure during World War II. Recast locomotive builders plate, 'Baldwin - Lima - Hamilton - Corp. Philadelphia. Pa., U.S.A.' plate numbered 75571 and stamp dated (August) 1952. Locomotive 5908 was built by the Baldwin Lima-Hamilton Corporation in 1952 as works number 75571. It was one of a class of 20 imported oil-fired locomotives ordered to ease the critical shortage of motive power after the Second World War. (the 'J Class' was built by the UK firm Vulcan foundry of Newton-le- Willows in 1953 and 1954. This class of 60 locomotives were a progression of the K class and were designed for easy conversion to standard gauge, the first thirty were built as coal burners and the final thirty were oil burners)
