The brooch commissioned to wear as a cloak/cape fastener. *** A Superb Contact Period Maori Argillite Mere the long finely modelled and well balanced mere of spatula shape with reduced grip and swelling to a ridged butt knob. Deep but incomplete suspension holes on either side of handle. Fine sharp edge with only one tiny chip, smooth surface with a bright all over polish. Light flecks and grain to the stone. Possibly pre-contact as suspension holes appear to be carved from non- metal tools. Provenance; found in bushland near Plimmerton, Lower North Island c.… ***
