A superb contact period Maori Argillite Mere the long finely modelled and well balanced mere of spatula shape with reduced grip and swelling to a ridged butt knob. Deep but incomplete suspension holes on either side of handle, fine sharp edge with only one tiny chip, smooth surface with a bright all over polish. Light flecks and grain to the stone. Possibly pre-contact as suspension holes appear to be carved from non- metal tools. Length 40.5 cm. Width 10.3 cm.
