Leonard Joel and its collectables head Giles Moon are forging an enviable reputation for auctioning the unusual. This time it is toys – the type that are keenly sought by collectors worldwide and for which they are prepared to pay an arm and a leg.

Sunday’s noon start at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra should ensure rapid passage for this single owner collection. The standout lot in the 378 items on offer, is a rare pre-World War II trade box for six Dinky 28/1 delivery vans (Lot 55 ) on which Joel's has placed an $8000-$12,000 estimate.

“A similar set sold in March 2008 in England for about $30,000 but were in much better condition than these,” Giles Moon said. “However, the set is so rare collectors will be very forgiving.”

So rare are some of the items in the sale that many collectors have only seen them in books.

“It is the first time they have been auctioned in Australia,” Giles said. “In fact, one of our leading dealers said he didn’t even know of the existence of one of the sets.”

This auction is creating a lot of international interest withy French, Belgian and UK collectors all keen to bid.

Other lots sure to attract plenty of attention include 378, a pre-World War II 1934 Japanese manufactured clockwork Mickey Mouse with its original box, and 367 – a 1930s Buck Rogers water pistol also with its box.
