Splash board for a large Ocean Going canoe, Tami or Siassi Island, huon Gulf, Morobe Province,Papua New Guinea. Provenance: Collected by Peter Hallinan, 1982, on Tuam Island, Dampier Straits, Morobe Province, from the owner of the large ocean going canoe Aigilo, carved by his grandfather Awago in the very early 20th century / Todd Barlin collection. Peter (1938-2015) was a well-known and respected field collector of New Guinea Art. As you see from the historical photo this type of canoe Splash board was only used on large elaborate ocean going canoes used for trading between the Mainland Coast and to New Britain Island. Peter collected several of these on his trips to the area, he said that these pieces were old ones kept by families. 128 x 50 cm
